Atlantic herring (lat. Clupea harengus) – is one of the most abundant fish species in the world and the most popular among Lithuanian consumers. Herring is one of the fattiest fish, its fat is easily absorbed, and the metabolism is different from animal fat, so you don’t have to be afraid of gaining weight. Herring lovers claim that the fatter the herring is, the tastier it is. According to scientists, the fattier the fish, the healthier it is for the human body. It is close to wild salmon in nutritional value and quality. Herrings are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D, B12, and selenium necessary for heart blood vessels. People who eat herring regularly have fewer common colds, fewer infections, better vision in old age and even more frequent prevention of eye diseases. Those suffering from kidney and liver diseases and those with ulcers or high blood pressure should consume herring in moderation. Of course, it should not be completely abandoned, only salted herring should be soaked in milk or strong tea before consumption, and it is also suitable to eat it boiled.
